About IEEE AVSS

The premier annual international conference on video and signal-based surveillance

Bringing together experts from academia, industry, and government to advance the theories, methods, systems, and applications that shape the future of surveillance technology.

What is AVSS?

The IEEE International Conference on Advanced Video and Signal based Surveillance (AVSS) is the leading annual forum dedicated to the field of video and signal-based surveillance. Since its inception, AVSS has served as a vital meeting point for researchers, practitioners, and decision-makers from around the world.

The conference covers the full spectrum of surveillance science — from foundational theory and novel methods to operational systems and real-world applications. Each edition features peer-reviewed paper presentations, keynote lectures from distinguished speakers, and hands-on workshops exploring emerging topics.

Proposals for workshops, tutorials, and special sessions play a vital role in shaping the AVSS conference program. These contributions allow the community to explore emerging topics in video and signal-based surveillance that may not yet be covered in the main technical track. Workshop organizers can bring together researchers and practitioners around niche areas such as activity recognition, traffic monitoring, or biometric systems. Tutorials offer attendees the chance to gain hands-on knowledge and deeper understanding of specific methodologies. Special sessions highlight innovative applications or interdisciplinary approaches. We encourage submissions that propose fresh perspectives, foster collaboration, and advance the state of the art in surveillance science.

A well-structured proposal should clearly outline the topic, objectives, and relevance to the AVSS community. Organizers are expected to describe the intended format, anticipated audience, and any planned invited speakers or panel discussions. The proposal should also address how the session complements the main conference themes and contributes to the broader field of advanced video and signal-based surveillance. Demonstrations of practical systems or live deployments are especially welcome, as they bridge the gap between theoretical research and real-world impact. All proposals undergo a review process to ensure quality and alignment with the conference's mission of advancing surveillance technologies in a responsible and innovative manner.

Submitting a proposal offers an excellent opportunity to shape the conversation at AVSS and connect with leading experts from academia, industry, and government. Accepted workshops and special sessions become integral parts of the conference program, attracting attendees who share specific research interests. Organizers benefit from increased visibility within the international surveillance community and the chance to influence future directions in the field. We welcome proposals covering all aspects of surveillance, including video analytics, sensor fusion, privacy-preserving methods, and ethical considerations. By contributing a proposal, you help ensure the conference remains a vibrant, comprehensive forum for the latest scientific and technological developments.

Sponsorship

AVSS is sponsored by the IEEE and, in particular, by two of its prominent technical societies:

  • IEEE Signal Processing Society — through the Image, Video, and Multidimensional Signal Processing Technical Committee (IVMSP TC).
  • IEEE Computer Society — through the Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence (PAMI) technical committee.

This dual sponsorship reflects the conference's interdisciplinary nature, bridging signal processing and computer vision communities.

Scope & Topics

AVSS welcomes high-quality contributions across a broad range of surveillance-related areas, including but not limited to:

  • Video analytics and scene understanding
  • Multi-sensor and distributed sensing architectures
  • Biometrics and identity management
  • Activity recognition and behaviour analysis
  • Tracking and data association
  • Surveillance systems and real-world deployments
  • Privacy, ethics, and legal aspects of surveillance

12th Edition — Karlsruhe 2015

The 12th edition of AVSS was held at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in Karlsruhe, Germany. The conference welcomed more than 150 attendees and featured a rich program spanning four days, from August 25 through August 28, 2015.

The program included a Workshop & Demo Day, the 2nd Industrial Surveillance Day, three full conference days of oral and poster sessions, and a memorable social program with a conference dinner at Heidelberg Castle.
